Five Outstanding Young Houstonians
Recognizing Houston’s Finest for 79 Years

The 2011 Five Outstanding Young Houstonians are:

Since 1932 the Houston Junior Chamber (Houston Jaycees) and the Houston Junior Chamber Foundation have recognized the outstanding young men and women of Houston for their accomplishments and contributions to the Houston community. Originally the award was known as the Distinguished Service Key Award and later changed to Outstanding Young Man of Houston in the early 1940s.
The Houston Jaycees expanded the recognition and awards program to include three outstanding men during the 1960s because of the growth of Houston and increased opportunities for business and civic involvement by young people between the ages of 18 and 35. These same factors caused the program to be expanded again in 1980 to recognize five outstanding young men.
In 1984, the name of the award was changed to Five Outstanding Young Houstonians to open the award to outstanding young women. The most recent modification in the program occurred in 1987, when the U.S. Junior Chamber altered the age requirements for membership in local Jaycee chapters to the ages of 21 through 40. Therefore, all Five Outstanding Young Houstonians are within this age group.
Each of the individuals honored by this award exemplifies the Jaycee Creed:

Houstonians who have received this recognition include President George H.W. Bush, Howard Hughes, Dr. Denton Cooley, Lt. Governor William P. Hobby, Jr., Attorney General Greg Abbott, CBS-TV Anchorman Dan Rather, Pastor Joel Osteen, Jim Dannenbaum, Jim Elkins, Jack Blanton, Mayors Lewis Cutrer and C.A. "Neal" Pickett, Senator Jack Ogg, Astronauts Gus Grissom and Ed White, and Judge Paul Pressler, Houston Oilers Warren Moon, Ray Childress and Curtis Duncan, Houston Astros Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio, and TV personalities Debra Duncan, Yolanda Green, and Miya Shay.
The five individuals who are selected as Outstanding Young Houstonians will then be submitted for the Five Outstanding Young Texans Competition, and if they are also selected at that level, they will compete in the Ten Outstanding Young Americans Competition, and then the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World Competition. The winners of the FOYH Awards for the 79th Year will be formally honored at a banquet
